Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is the largest tertiary provider in the Bay of Plenty and the third largest institute of technology in New Zealand.
We are home to more than 14,000 students, more than 1,000 staff, and we offer more than 150 programmes ranging from certificate to post-graduate level.
Our History
Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is an amalgamation of two high performing institutions – Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in Tauranga, and Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua. The institutions merged in May 2016 to better meet the education and employment needs of the region.

Academic entry requirements
Applicants must be high school graduates with acceptable results in relevant subjects. Special conditions apply to some qualifications and to students under 18 years of age.
Attendance requirements
As an enrolled full-time student, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) requires study visa holders to attend all timetabled/scheduled classes, and to show academic progress if requested by INZ. If you do not comply with these conditions, INZ can revoke your study visa and you will be requested to leave the country.

Code of practice
As a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, we may enrol international students aged 14 and older.
English as a first language
The English proficiency requirements do not apply to international students whose first language is English. Currently, New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) allows institutions to treat English as the first language, or one of the first languages, of an international student provided they have evidence that the student has either:

New Zealand qualifications structure
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has:
- A scale of 10 levels
- Three-year bachelor’s degrees, starting Year 1 at Level 5 and finishing Year 3 at Level 7
- New Zealand’s three-year degree is at the same level as the final three years of a four-year bachelor’s degree in most countries. This is mainly because New Zealand students complete an extra year at high school.
- completed all primary education and at least 3 years of secondary education (that is, the equivalent of New Zealand Forms 3 to 5 or years 9 to 11) at schools using English as the language of instruction;
- completed at least 5 years of secondary education (that is, the equivalent of New Zealand Forms 3 to 7 or years 9 to 13) at schools using English as the language of instruction.

Toi Ohomai can help arrange accommodation while you are here for your studies.
HALL OF RESIDENCE (ROTORUA) Tangatarua Hall of Residence, a hostel owned by Toi Ohomai, is located next to the Toi Ohomai campus in Rotorua. Situated in a park-like setting with mature landscaping and open spaces, the hall offers our students an attractive and affordable residence within walking distance to campus.
SHARED ACCOMMODATION (TAURANGA) Toi Ohomai rents houses next to the Windermere Campus in Tauranga. The bedrooms are lockable and furnished. Living areas and bathrooms are shared with at least one other student. The houses contain essential cooking utensils, crockery and appliances, washing machine, fridge/freezer, and a television.
HOMESTAY We recommend living in a homestay option, especially if you are studying English and want to be able to practice your English with your host family. The family environment can also ease the adjustment of living in a new country with different food, language and customs. We recommend you commit to staying at least one month with your homestay family, while you to adjust to life in Rotorua or Tauranga, and for you and your homestay family to adjust to each other.
The homestay fee of NZ$195- 250 per week includes your own room, three meals a day, power and laundry facilities. The fee may include internet access.
FLATTING (SHARING A HOUSE) If you plan to live in a rented house or apartment with one or more people, we call that “flatting”. You and your flatmates will be responsible for finding your own furniture, bedding, cooking utensils and other household necessities. You can find all of these items new at shops in town, or to keep costs down, you can buy many things from second-hand shops.
You will need to set up and share the cost of power and other bills, plus cook your meals, do your laundry and abide by the rental agreement.
It can take some time to find a flat to rent and you may need to stay in temporary accommodation for the first two to four weeks after arriving in New Zealand. This is where a hall of residence, shared accommodation, or homestay options would be desirable.
ACCOMMODATION FOR FAMILIES Most of the accommodation providers Toi Ohomai works with are set up to host individual students only; not many of them are able to accept a family or couples.
If you plan to bring your family, we strongly recommend that you come to New Zealand on your own first and arrive a couple weeks before our orientation programme. Arriving early will give you time to look for long-term family accommodation in the private housing market.
If your family comes with you, you may need to stay in a hotel or motel while you try to find long-term accommodation. This can be very expensive.
BASIC EXPENSES •• Rent for students in our area generally ranges from NZD$150-170* per week; this will include power and water. •• Groceries per week will cost approximately NZD$70-80*. •• Other daily expenses will start around NZD$40* per week.
